Mandatory Pet Food Labelling Items in Malaysia (Feed Labelling Regulations 2012)
Pet food labelling in Malaysia follows the Feed (Labelling of Feed or Feed Additive) Regulations 2012. The heart of a compliant label is letting consumers and the competent authority see at a glance "who it is for, what it contains, how much nutrition is guaranteed, who is responsible, when it was made, and how to feed it". This article lists the mandatory items one by one and explains why each matters and where they are easily missed. (For the full overview, see the Malaysia Pet Food Regulations and Labelling Guide.)
What must a pet food label state?
| Mandatory item | Notes |
|---|---|
| Product name and target animal | e.g. for dogs/cats, puppy/adult |
| Ingredients | List of raw materials |
| Guaranteed analysis | Crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, moisture, etc. |
| Net weight | — |
| Manufacturer / importer name and address | Responsible party |
| Batch number | For traceability |
| Manufacturing / expiry date | — |
| Feeding instructions | Dosage recommendation |
| Warning | Where applicable |
Why does each item matter?
- Product name and target animal: cats and dogs have different nutritional needs, as do puppies and adults. Clear labelling prevents owners from buying and feeding the wrong thing — it is the first line of safety.
- Ingredients: they let owners judge allergies and choose a formula; they are also the basis on which the competent authority compares the formula against the claims. When pork-derived material is present, it must be clearly declared (this involves halal and religious considerations).
- Guaranteed analysis: the "guaranteed range" of the feed's nutrition — crude protein/fat as a minimum, crude fibre/moisture as a maximum, and it must be verifiable by sampling. See how to label pet food guaranteed analysis.
- Net weight: the basis for pricing and comparison, and a matter of consumer rights.
- Manufacturer/importer name and address: the "someone to reach" if something goes wrong — the responsible party's information. Imported products must state the importer's name and address and the country of origin.
- Batch number: when a recall or a quality-traceability issue is needed, the batch number pins down the scope.
- Manufacturing/expiry date: feed oxidises and deteriorates, so the date is the basis for freshness and safety.
- Feeding instructions: give a dosage recommendation by weight/age to avoid overfeeding or underfeeding.
- Warning: where applicable (for example, specific targets or usage precautions), it must be clearly stated.
Common mistakes
- Omitting the guaranteed analysis or the target animal: both are core; missing either means the label is incomplete.
- Missing the importer's name and address, the batch number or the date: most common on imported products, directly affecting traceability and clearance.
- Not declaring pork-derived material: this involves halal and consumers' right to know, and must be disclosed.
- Vague feeding instructions: writing only "an appropriate amount" without specific recommendations by weight/age is not useful enough.
What extra must imported products state?
If the product is imported rather than locally manufactured, in addition to the items in the table above it must also carry the country of origin and the importer's name and address, and undergo border inspection; locally manufactured products need only state the manufacturer. Cross-border sellers often reuse the export-version label and omit the importer's information, which is a common reason for listings being rejected. For the full import process, see the process and DVS permit for importing pet food into Malaysia.
How to self-check
- Tick off item by item against the table above, confirming that none of the nine categories is missing.
- Re-confirm separately the two most commonly missed items — the target animal and the guaranteed analysis.
- For special cases such as pork-derived material or drug ingredients, confirm they have been disclosed as required (for drug-containing products, see also the medicated-feed rules).
- For imported products, confirm the country of origin and the importer's name and address have been added.
- Confirm the feeding instructions are specific enough to act on by weight/age.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Q: Must the target animal be stated? Yes. You must clearly state for dogs/cats, etc., to avoid misuse.
Q: Which regulation is the labelling based on? The Feed (Labelling of Feed or Feed Additive) Regulations 2012.
Q: Are the mandatory items the same for imported and local products? The basic items are the same, but imported products must additionally carry the country of origin and the importer's name and address and undergo border inspection.
Q: Must pork-derived ingredients be labelled? Yes. This involves halal and consumers' right to know, and must be declared clearly and not hidden.
Q: Can feeding instructions just say "an appropriate amount"? Not recommended. You should give a specific dosage recommendation by weight/age to be useful and compliant.
Self-check checklist
- [ ] Product name and target animal clearly stated
- [ ] Ingredients fully listed, with pork-derived material declared
- [ ] Guaranteed analysis complete (protein/fat min, fibre/moisture max)
- [ ] Net weight, batch number and manufacturing/expiry date all present
- [ ] Manufacturer/importer name and address complete (country of origin for imported products)
- [ ] Feeding instructions specific, and warning stated where applicable
Summary
The core of pet food labelling = target animal + ingredients + guaranteed analysis + net weight + responsible manufacturer + date + feeding instructions. Tick off each item, pay special attention to the most commonly missed target animal and guaranteed analysis, and you can greatly reduce the risk of rejection. Want to check your label?
